Man, FZJ80's have big wheel wells
It may not look that impressive, but these are huge tires to fit on very tired, very stock springs. Here is an XJ with a 4.5 inch lift and the same tires for reference

Impressive.
What are the number sizes? I love the Duratracs we were going to put a set on my wife's Jeep Commander but they are damn expensive.

They ARE damn expensive. 285/75r16. a set of 5 mounted and balanced was $1200

We were looking at 245/75/R17's for the jeep commander. Would have been same height but yours are wider and just a bit taller. The 245/75/17 would have fit without any adjustments to the suspension on the commander, they are surprisingly capable trucks (and very much so ignored).
You can get 4x4, a Hemi, and big tires real easy with them (unfortunately ours is a V6)

The commander really is a great overlooked truck. I really dig the exteriors...but the interior wasn't made in Jeeps finest hour.

I see no rubbing. Seems like you could forgo the springs should you so choose.

I don't mind the interior. Maybe it's because she went from an 06 Liberty up to an 08 Commander. The Liberty had the worst interior I've ever traveled in. We took a long road trip in it one time and I swore it would never happen again.
It's bulky and boxy on the interior, but I think it matches the bulky I'm fancy but also rugged feel of the outside.
Anyhow I didn't mean to hi-jack your thread here. Your truck can handle some serious tire and I'm glad to see you put it to good use. I remember when you posted about it's purchase, happy to hear it's treating you well.

well, I checked it out last night and while they don't rub articulating, they have about 3.5 inches up front and 4 inches in back before the tops of the tire hit the sheet metal assuming the axle uses its travel uniformly. The rear travel is 8.9 stock, and I'm assume that include negative travel so figure 5 inches of travel which puts me at an inch of rubbing if i bottom out on the stops. I haven't have a change to test it out yet, but I'm hoping it doesn't cause a problem. Granted, my springs are so worn that im only about 2 inches from the bump stops in the rear, so maybe just new stock coils would do the trick.

so far so good, I just got the spare mounted this morning...man that sucker sits low (underneath) but I also just ordered a leveling kit thats supposed to raise up up about 3-4 inches. So that will help.

You weren't on the stops in the first picture? I just assumed you were. I found that my tires didn't rub the top of the wheel well ever but the side wall with tread did catch the fender flares as they tucked in into the wells.

Yeah I was pretty close to the stops articulated, but I do think Im going to hit the sheet metal seam when I use my travel linearly. The tires clear 100% when angled in articulation though.

Gotcha, that very well could be the case. A bit harder to test as well. I've been thinking about a set of these or something like them for a while. I think it would make for a nice suspension mod.

a leveling kit that lifts 3-4 inches? I think that's a LIFT kit. Did you mean 3/4 of an inch?
Sounds like you need a sweet roof basket with MOAR LIGHTS and you can store your spare up there. MOAR clearance too getting that low-rider spare out of the way.

no, a leveling kit for the spare the 80 we got here never came with the optional fuel tank above the spare mounting location so there is about 6 inches of dead space above it. This kit moves things around to allow the spare to take up some of that dead space and pull it up from the ground. It levels and lifts the tire to avoid dragging it on the ground. Though most hard core types just get a swing away rear bumper and tire carrier, buts that's about $1500 and the kit was $70.

AHHHH I've never heard of a SPARE leveling kit.
Makes much more sense now. You can only imagine the "HUH?" look that was on my face when I read 3-4 inch leveling kit.

yeah, I can see that. I am thinking about a 2 inch lift though, we'll see how this does. Its clear I already need a new steering dampener.
